St Sophia Cathedral is another formidable example of Gothic Architecture, resembling the Parisian Cathedral of “Reims”.  Constructed by the Lusignans in 1209 it took just over a century to complete.  The site was used for many years for the coronation of the Lusignans Kings. In 1571, the Ottomans converted the Cathedral into a mosque and it is presently known as Selemiye Mosque.

Within the walls of the Selimiye Mosque, the beautiful interior gives a spacious and serene feel. The original cathedral features have been carefully reused, enabling the presence of the Islamic atmosphere to blend intimately with the Christian ambience.
