Bellapais Monastery

Bellapais is a charming village clinching the green slopes of the Five Finger Mountains of Northern Cyprus. Surrounded by outstanding natural beauty, tiny cobbled streets and beautiful traditional buildings on every corner, the village will capture every visitor’s heart. For many, Bellapais was made famous by Lawrence Durrell, the British author of the book “Bitter Lemons” that chronicles his time as a local resident of this panoramic village in the 1950s.  The main focal point of Bellapais is the 12th century Abbey constructed by Augustinian monks, who came to Cyprus from the Holy land. It’s Gothic Architecture and peaceful aura is the perfect place to take some time out and gaze far out into sea and catch a glimpse of the imposing Toros Mountains of Turkey.  Alternatively you can sample the local cuisine in one of the many restaurants before exploring the ancient crusader footpaths that zig zag the mountain.
