Nicosia City Walls

The old part of Lefkosa is surrounded by impressive defensive walls, originally built during the medieval times. The Crusaders constructed strong defensive walls, complete with tall towers designed to withstand the invaders arrows and catapults. By the time of the Venetian era, something more powerful and destructive was used in battle warfare; gunpowder and powerful cannons.  For this reason the Venetians restructured and fortified the outer walls by dismantling many Frankish gothic cathedrals in order to minimise the damage from the new weaponry.  The original towers were replaced with 11 stronger bastions, specially designed to resist cannon fire.
